ICE Shooter Behind Death of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo Identified

The ICE agent who killed Lorenzo Salgado Araujo has been identified as Gregory Feathers

For nearly three months the federal government refused to say who shot Lorenzo Salgado Araujo. A joint investigation by the ICE List and The Texas Tribune has now identified him. He is ICE agent Gregory Feathers. Witnesses say Feathers fired through an open van window and killed the 52-year-old Houston father on 7 July.

Salgado Araujo had lived in Houston for about 35 years. He was married with three sons, built homes in the city's suburbs, and had no criminal convictions in Texas. His son says he was on his way to pick up his workers when four ICE agents in unmarked black SUVs chased down his van. He was shot in the stomach and died on a barbershop driveway in the East End.

Our own investigation had been put on hold for over a month, with our team stuck on the available evidence. Reporters at the Texas Tribune brought our investigation back online, revealing some information that was not previously known to us.

A Form I-213, the agents' report of the chase and shooting, names Feathers as one of the arresting officers. Victor Salgado Araujo was in the front seat. He picked Feathers out of a photograph and described a heavy-set, bearded man with military-style hair and tattoos on both forearms. "The bullet passed right in front of me," he said. "They destroyed our whole family."

Feathers had retired from ICE. He was brought back within the past two years, one of the former officers the Trump administration recruited with $50,000 signing bonuses to meet its deportation targets.

Feathers has not been charged. Harris County District Attorney Sean Teare is empaneling a grand jury, and the FBI, the U.S. Attorney's Office and DHS are each investigating.

Most police departments name officers involved in shootings within days. DHS instead called naming him "doxxing." This is not a normal response for a Law Enforcement related death in the USA, however, has become all too typical of the deaths that have occurred at the hands of ICE under the Trump regime.
