Corrections and appeals

The record exists to be accurate and to hold up to scrutiny. That only works if errors are easy to report and quick to fix. This page explains how we handle corrections, and how someone who is the subject of an entry can contest it.

The principles we work from

  • We document public officials acting in their official capacity, and the facilities and operations of immigration enforcement. We do not target private individuals.
  • An identification is a lead until it is corroborated. A single match is never published as a claim on its own.
  • When an account is disputed, we document the dispute and link the evidence rather than assert a conclusion.
  • Every entry is meant to be sourced. If a claim cannot be sourced, it does not belong in the record.

Report an error

If something is wrong, tell us and we will check it against the sources. The more specific you can be, the faster we can act. Where possible, include:

  • The page or entry (a link is best).
  • What specifically is wrong.
  • Any evidence or sources that support the correction.

Write to icelist@crustnews.com, or, if the matter is sensitive, use our encrypted tip line, Hushline.

Contest an entry about yourself

If you are the subject of an entry, or you represent them, you can contest it. Tell us who you are and what you are contesting. We will re-check the entry against its sources. What follows depends on what we find:

  • If an identification is not corroborated, we remove it or mark it clearly as unconfirmed.
  • If a fact is wrong, we correct it.
  • If your account differs from what a source states, we can record your response alongside the entry, so the dispute is visible.

What we will not do is quietly delete sourced, corroborated facts about a public official acting in their official capacity simply because they are unwelcome. Accountability of officials carrying out enforcement is the purpose of the record. Errors, though, we fix, and context we will always add.

How long it takes

We are a volunteer project, so we cannot promise instant turnaround, but we treat corrections, and especially safety-sensitive ones, as a priority. If a correction is urgent, say so in your first message.

The full record is a wiki at theicelist.org; corrections there propagate to the rest of the project.
